In and around the Conroe and Montgomery area, there are several options for where residents can volunteer at to help with the community, children, animals, food insecurity programs and other nonprofit groups. Henry’s Home Horse and Human Sanctuary

The nonprofit is a haven for rescued horses and provides therapeutic programs at no cost to veterans and first responders.

The Montgomery County Animal Shelter helps with animal care and placement in Montgomery County. The shelter cares for hundreds of dogs and cats by providing services such as neutering and microchipping while holding animals until they can be placed in a new home.

Assistance League of Montgomery County


Assistance League’s all-volunteer nonprofit organization has been transforming the lives of children and adults in Montgomery County since 1985 through its seven community programs.

Sample activities: work in the thrift shop, assist with various community programs, serve as team leaders, administrative work, information technology, accounting/bookkeeping, marketing and social media

The Community Assistance Center offers a variety of essential assistance programs from basic need services to long-term case management for individuals and families. The nonprofit helps with things like food, clothing, non-narcotic prescriptions, utility, rent/mortgage and more. The volunteer-driven organization provides and promotes affordable, high-quality mediation services and training to the Montgomery County area. They have been helping people with difficult conversations since 1988 so that they can resolve disputes quickly, confidentially, affordably and in a manner that supports the best interests of Montgomery County residents, especially children.

The organization is dedicated to creating sustainable, high-quality solutions that support the educational, vocational, social and residential needs of the neurodiverse community. The Beacon Access Center, located in Oak Ridge North, serves individuals across Montgomery and North Harris County—offering a supportive environment where neurodiverse adults can grow, connect and thrive as vital members of the broader community.

Children’s Books on Wheels

The nonprofit provides educational and community resources to the Tamina community and surrounding residents. Volunteers are needed for the organization’s tax assistance program, VITA and other community activities.

Bayou Land Conservancy

Bayou Land Conservancy conserves over 15,000 acres from Bryan to Beaumont, focusing on key areas that impact the water supply, wildlife, and flood control. Volunteers can work on trail maintenance, special events, join a committee or lead guided hikes for the community.

Keep US Fed Montgomery County

The nonprofit has rescued and redistributed over 9 million pounds of surplus food at no cost to food-insecure neighbors since 2015, alleviating hunger and reducing food waste in the community. Over 4,500 tons of food have filled stomachs instead of landfills thanks to volunteer efforts, nonprofit officials said. The typical food recovery run is 60-90 minutes.

The food bank receives, packages, and purposefully distributes nutritious food to hungry children, seniors and families through a network of 90-plus partner agencies.

Family Promise of Montgomery County helps families experiencing homelessness and housing instability to achieve lasting independence through shelter, education, case management and community support. The mission is to help families build a path toward stability while treating every guest with dignity and compassion.

Sample activities: serve as a front desk volunteer, greeting guests and assisting staff; provide dinners for families staying at the shelter; host activities such as game nights, crafts or outdoor fun for children and parents

Meals on Wheels Montgomery County

Meals on Wheels Montgomery County provides homebound seniors across the county with hot, nutritious meals, friendly volunteer visits that double as safety checks, and dependable curb-to-curb transportation to essential appointments.

Angel Reach

The nonprofit serves kinship families and youth aging out of the foster care system as well as young people ages 16-24 at risk for homelessness. The organization provides housing, counseling, transportation, employment coaching and educational advising.

The organization empowers vulnerable children through volunteer advocacy. The vision of the nonprofit is to create a connected community where children and families thrive, and the nonprofit works to eliminate childhood trauma, abuse and neglect.
