Lone Star Family Health Center has received two grants totaling $1.6 million to expand its services, according to an Oct. 29 news release.

Both grants are from the Health Resources and Services Administration, according to the news release.

A $500,000 grant from HRSA’s Acceleration Cancer Screening Program will allow Lone Star Family Health Center to enhance screening and referral rates for breast, colorectal and cervical cancers in collaboration with MD Anderson Cancer Center, according to the news release.

“These screenings are vital to the early identification of cancer and other health concerns, giving patients the best chance for success,” CEO Karen Harwell said via news release.


A $1.1 million grant from HRSA will be used to expand behavioral health services, including increasing the availability of counseling, psychiatric services and substance abuse treatment, according to the news release.

“With these funds, we plan to add resources allowing us to better integrate behavioral health services into our primary care setting,” Harwell said.
