Montgomery County commissioners are set to begin work on the county’s fiscal year 2026-27 budget, with a proposed calendar that lays out months of department meetings, public presentations, budget workshops and a final adoption date Sept. 8.

The budget calendar launched the FY 2026-27 process April 9, with a formal kick-off scheduled for the next Commissioners Court meeting April 23, Budget Officer Amanda Carter said.
According to the county’s budget schedule, the first phase—budget development—runs from April 9 to July 15 and includes training, budget packet distribution and meetings between the budget office, department heads and elected officials about their funding needs.
County departments would receive budget training and budget packets April 27-May 1, per the calendar. After that, the budget office is scheduled to meet with individual departments and elected officials from May 7-June 12.
The big picture
Per Carter's presentation, the process is broken into three stages: budget development, preliminary budget and workshops, and adoption with compensation updates.
Under that outline, the preliminary budget and workshop phase runs from July 15-Aug. 14, followed by adoption and compensation updates from Aug. 17-Oct. 30.
The preliminary budget is scheduled to be distributed to departments for review July 15-17, then filed with the county clerk and county auditor for public inspection July 21. A public presentation on the preliminary budget is set for Aug. 6, followed by budget workshops Aug. 11-14.
Why it matters
The calendar also maps out when residents will get a chance to weigh in. Citizen comments on the preliminary budget are scheduled for the Aug. 6 Commissioners Court meeting, while public hearings on the proposed FY 2026-27 budget and tax rate are slated for Sept. 8, according to the schedule. Commissioners are also expected to adopt the FY 2026-27 budget that day.
Looking ahead
After budget adoption, the county’s compensation program would return to Commissioners Court on Sept. 17. The first paycheck with FY 2026-27 rates is scheduled for Oct. 30, according to the county’s presentation and budget calendar.
