During its Aug. 22 meeting, Conroe City Council approved the termination of the city’s contract with Care Corporation, which ran the Conroe Animal Shelter.

In a nutshell

The decision to terminate the contract comes after a dog injured itself, putting the practices of Care Corporation into question, according to an Aug. 9 news release.

Council agreed to terminate the contract within a transition period of 30 days or less.

The details

Care Corporation is operating the animal shelter with two city staff members daily, interim Police Chief Lee Tipton said during the meeting.

The transition period of no more than 30 days would allow for the purchasing of software to access animal data and allow for a new operator to take over, Tipton said.

Quote of note

“I just want to be clear that the liabilities we open ourselves up to in this 30-day period could be substantial,” Mayor Duke Coon said during the Aug. 22 meeting. “Chief, the council is going to move forward. I’m going to move forward with them on this decision, but apparently we need to get some more [city staff] over there [at the animal shelter].”
