Conroe City Council will hold a special meeting Feb. 27 to conduct a public hearing regarding the property at 601 W. Lewis St. and consider approving a resolution expressing support for the proposed income-based housing planned there.

What happened

During its Feb. 21 workshop meeting, City Council decided to defer approving a resolution expressing support for the housing project in order to hold the Feb. 27 special meeting.

April Engstrom, director of development for Overland Property Group LLC, did give a presentation about the proposed income-based housing during the workshop meeting. In her presentation, Engstrom shared a site plan for the property that featured a total of 79 general/multifamily units—55 in the historic building and 24 in a new building.

How we got here

The property at 601 W. Lewis St. was previously proposed to be a new performing arts venue. However, at its Dec. 14 meeting, Conroe City Council approved a contract to sell the property to Overland Property Group LLC, which intends to develop income-based housing.

What else?

Conroe is allowing people to tour the Sam Houston Elementary School building Monday, Feb. 26, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. People interested in touring the building are asked to contact Facilities Manager Tammie Rushing at 936-522-3000.

Quote of note

“The situation that we’re in with the city is a tough financial situation,” council member Howard Wood said during the Feb. 21 workshop meeting. “There’s no doubt. ... None of us said, ‘Hey, let’s just go sell the school.’ We have a financial problem. The [Hyatt Regency Conroe] hotel has changed the landscape of this city.”
