During a Feb. 20 board meeting, the Conroe ISD board of trustees appointed a new chief financial officer, approved its District of Innovation plan and selected the school colors for Janet K. Bartlett Elementary School.

Two-minute impact

CISD board members approved the appointment of Karen Garza as the new chief financial officer for the district.

Garza has served as director of finance at CISD for 18 years.

"Garza has spent 18 years in our finance department," Superintendent Curtis Null said. "She knows it from the entry level, all the way to the top. I don't believe there is anyone in the state that understands the school funding formula better than Garza. She is rooted in this community, she believes in what we do and she is invested."

She will start at the beginning of the 2024-25 school year following the retirement of current CFO Darrin Rice at the end of the summer.

Rice served as CFO for nine years and worked for the district for over 30 years.

Also on the agenda

Campus mascot nominations and school colors for Janet K. Bartlett Elementary were presented Feb. 20 to the board.
  • There are three mascot nominations, including the Bartlett bobcats, bears or bucks.
  • Students and families who will attend Bartlett can vote on the mascot they want Feb. 26-March 1.
  • A final recommendation for the mascot will be brought to the board at the March 19 meeting.
  • The school colors will be maroon and gray.
Bartlett Elementary is expected to open in August at 11255 Cielo Drive, Conroe, in the Caney Creek and Conroe high school feeders. Chris McCord, assistant superintendent of operations, said it will be one of the district’s last new elementary campuses to be built in the near future.

One more thing

The board also approved the District of Innovation plan on Feb. 20 after the DOI committee reviewed public comments and held an opening meeting Feb. 14.

The DOI designation allows more flexibility for districts in areas such as calendar start and end dates, class size and certain other aspects of operations.

The current plan DOI plan expires in December 2025. Superintendent Curtis Null said some of the new provisions, such as changes to teacher hiring contracts, will go into effect immediately, while others will start with the new plan in 2026.
