The Lone Star College board of trustees officially appointed Mario Castillo as the new chancellor during a special meeting Aug. 11.

What happened

Castillo is the fifth chancellor to serve the Lone Star College System. According to a news release Aug. 11, Castillo is following former Chancellor Stephen Head, who retired after serving the college since 2014. Castillo has served Lone Star College since 2015.
  • Castillo has served as vice chancellor, general counsel and chief operating officer within Lone Star College.
  • He earned a Juris Doctor from the Maurer School of Law at Indiana University in Bloomington.
  • He received his Bachelor of Arts in government from The University of Texas in Austin.
  • Castillo is also a first-generation high school, college and law school student and a first-generation American.
The LSC board of trustees voted unanimously to name Castillo as the sole finalist during a special meeting held July 21. Castillo officially began his duties Aug. 11.
