The week of June 14 in Montgomery County highlighted two trends: Residents and officials willingness to honor law enforcement as well as celebrate the lives of black people. On June 16, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department hosted its annual awards ceremony, recognizing personnel who went above and beyond their duty and in some cases put their own lives in danger.

On June 19, residents celebrated Juneteenth, which commemorates the day in 1865 when Union Gen. Gordon Granger came to Galveston to announce the liberation of enslaved people in Texas. The event is a state holiday and is celebrated by communities across Texas and the United States.
