Veron’s Cajun Meat Market was birthed on Dyer Veron’s wagon in Louisiana in 1919. He sold his products out on the open roadway until he moved his growing business into a storefront.

His son Ronnie carries on the legacy of quality meat products in Atascocita, a move he said he made because customers in Louisiana begged him to move to the Greater Houston area in the 1980s.

Besides selling high choice to prime grade quality steaks—aged and custom-cut to meet customer specifications—Veron’s also sells homemade, Cajun food products customers will not find anywhere else.

“It makes me feel good when people come in here and tell me they never thought prime grade steak could taste that much better [than regular steak] and my steak made their anniversary great,” Veron said. “That’s why I’ve been doing this all these years.”

The shop is located on FM 1960, just east of West Lake Houston Parkway, and still possesses a Louisiana flare.

To this day, loyal customers from around the state stop in to fill coolers full of the flavorful products they said are hard to find in the Greater Houston area, Veron said.

“We’re a specialty meat market because we specialize in items you can’t get at the grocery stores, and they’re made right here in the store—not in some factory, where they’re made, then frozen and shipped out,” he said. “It’s just good food. We take pride in selling good quality products.”

Boneless, stuffed chicken breasts are another bestseller. They are stuffed with anything from Veron’s homemade pork sausage, dirty rice and crawfish etouffee to spinach, cream cheese and jalapeno cornbread. Veron’s homemade sausage options include pork, beef and pork, venison and pork, crawfish and smoked chicken varieties.

Elton Williams a Cleveland, Texas, resident and customer of Veron’s for 20 years, said the unique Cajun flavor and quality meat products keep him coming back for more.

Williams enjoys the stuffed pork chops, which are packed with Veron’s homemade sausage and are a popular sales item. But he cannot leave without buying enough twice-baked potatoes—seasoned with Veron’s Cajun Seasoning—for his entire family.

“Anything you buy here is great,” Williams said. “The Cajun taste is there; you don’t have to go to Louisiana to buy it.”
