Brazos County Commissioners Court is set to approve the county's policy and guidelines for artificial intelligence use, along with various construction projects and repairs at its June 23 meeting.
What you need to know
The court is looking to implement a strategy on AI use with county information and resources. According to the agenda material, the strategy hopes to accomplish the following:
- Ensure county data is protected from unauthorized access, use, or exposure
- Reduce reputational risk by providing a framework for the responsible, ethical and transparent use of AI within county processes
- Maximize the benefits of AI while minimizing the risk to internal county business
- Protect employee and resident data
Per agenda material, the county is concerned with privacy and data protection, as well as accountability and transparency in its use in official business. Any person using AI tools for official county business would also be unable to name the county in those tools.

- Deductive change orders: A County Improvement Project was overpaid, according to agenda materials. For the Brazos County scour repair with solid bridge construction, two projects were overpaid by $41,435. Both projects will now cost:
- Harris Lane: $314,606
- Fickey Road North: $408,168
- Forensic lab technician salary: As part of the county’s ongoing efforts to create and operate a local medical examiner's office, commissioners will consider setting the salary for a full-time lab technician at the rate of $28.26. The rate would increase the department’s fiscal year 2025-56 budget by $24,025. The position was approved without discussion at the June 9 Commissioners Court meeting.
- Consider multiple Comcast utility permits: Comcast has been working for months to install 2-inch conduits and road crossings along Brazos County roads. In this next round, Precinct 1 would receive 23 crossings at 10 county roads, and Precinct 4 would have 27 crossings at seven county roads, including roads within the Old Spanish Trail Estates and Benchley Oaks subdivisions.
- Interlocal agreement: Commissioners will review an interlocal agreement for Burleson County to buy 286 road and miscellaneous signs for $100. The county said these items are no longer needed by Brazos County.
