Brazos County receives update on 2025 groundwater supply

Brazos and Robertson counties, which are both served by the Brazos Valley GCD, primarily receive water from the Brazos River Alluvium, Simsboro and Calvert Bluff aquifers.

Day said the district uses a planning system to see how aquifers should look in 50 years. If groundwater levels approach those limits, pumping restrictions can be implemented to prevent overuse.

According to the district, aquifers in the area remain stable and are expected to stay viable long term if current management practices continue.

A major focus of the presentation was encouraging residents with private wells to register them with the district.

Day noted what he called common misconceptions, stressing that registering wells does not mean meters will be installed on exempt residential wells. Instead, registration helps the district track groundwater use and protect landowners if large commercial wells are put in nearby.

“It helps us help you,” Day said.

District records show about 7,600 registered wells across the area, though officials estimate 2,000-3,000 more based on historical data.

Commissioners discussed increasing development pressures across the county and how future projects could affect groundwater demand.

Day said the district’s board prioritizes ensuring local water needs are met first before considering any outside water marketing or large-scale transfers.

Commissioners and Day also talked about hosting a future public meeting to help residents better understand how aquifers function and how groundwater is managed. They said improving transparency and public communication will be an important part of future water planning efforts.

“At least they can say we were responsible enough to try to communicate,” Precinct 4 Commissioner Wanda Watson said.

The groundwater presentation came during a lengthy Commissioners Court meeting that included several other county decisions.

Commissioners approved moving forward with the $59 million construction contract of a new Brazos County courthouse annex, a $71 million project expected to take about two years to complete. The annex will include additional office space and secured parking to support growing county work.

The court also approved an increase in the design budget for a separate county administration building project and addressed routine agenda items, including board appointments, reimbursements for protective services involving federal elected officials and issuance of company credit cards to several county employees.

A proposed land purchase for a future fire station was postponed after questions came up about property platting details.
