Houstonians planning to use the Brays Bayou Greenway trail along the Loop 610 southbound bridge can expect to take a detoured route until early 2024.

That’s the suggestion from Houston Parks Board officials while the Texas Department of Transportation works to put a new, wider bridge in the area.

What to know: Work on the bridge officially began April 22 and construction is anticipated to last until February 2024, according to Texas Department of Transportation officials. During that time, a section of the trail at the North Braeswood Boulevard intersection and Loop 610 southbound feeder road will be inaccessible.

What to expect: A detour trail will be setup by TxDOT while the bridge demolition undergoes three phases, according to park officials.

Phase 1: five months, estimated April-September 2023

  • Trail users heading east along the trail will use the crosswalk across North Braeswood Boulevard at the Loop 610 southbound feeder road, from the south side of North Braeswood Boulevard to the north side of North Braeswood Boulevard.
  • Users will then use the crosswalk across the Loop 610 southbound feeder road to the raised median between the U-turn and westbound North Braeswood Boulevard to get to the east side of Loop 610.
  • Next, users will next access the crosswalk across the northbound feeder road to get to the east side of that road, then use the crosswalk on North Braeswood Boulevard to get from the north side of North Braeswood Boulevard to the south side, where they can connect back to the trail.

Phase 2-3: estimated October 2023-February 2024

  • The detour trail will change after Phase 1 is complete, park officials said. Trail users will need to utilize the existing crosswalk at Endicott Lane to cross over North Braeswood Boulevard. Users will continue along the north side of North Braeswood Boulevard using the existing sidewalk.

TxDOT officials also mentioned the timeline is subject to change, saying this was the best information the organization could immediately provide.

For any questions about the project and the trail detour, Houston Parks Board Outreach Manager Lisa Hernandez said to call TxDOT’s Public Information Office at 713-802-5076.
