A total of four pickleball courts at Wier Park will be available to West University Place players once modifications are completed around May 31, according to city officials. While two courts currently exist at the park, restriping will take place to add two new courts.

The new court additions come after West University Place’s Parks and Recreation board members approved the recommendations brought forth by West U's Tennis and Pickleball Committee in early May.

What’s happening

Existing pickleball striping on the court will be removed and replaced with new markings to accommodate the expanded layout.

Updates also include a modification to the court’s divider fence, where most of the fence between the courts will be removed. Only the fence portions near the perimeter fencing will remain, according to the May 19 announcement.

Looking back

Since early 2024, West University Planning and Zoning officials have spoken at City Council meetings addressing the city's growing interest in pickleball. The Planning and Zoning Department's Commission Chair John Cutrer said at an April 2024 City Council meeting that the city is experiencing a surging popularity in pickleball.

Something to note

While the contractor works on the park’s upgrades, the tennis and pickleball courts will be closed starting May 22. The rest of the park will still be accessible to residents, according to a May 19 announcement from city officials.
