What’s happening
BARC Animal Shelter is partnering with the national nonprofit BISSELL Pet Foundation to launch its “Empty the Shelters” adoption event from July 5-19. During the event, adoption fees will be reduced to $20 for dogs and puppies, and $10 for cats and kittens.
Quote of note
“Shelters across the country are once again at a breaking point. They are facing record intakes and limited space. Too often, loving, healthy pets are at risk, but our communities hold the key to their future,” BISSELL Pet Foundation founder Cathy Bissell said in a July news release. “Our summer national Empty the Shelters is more than an adoption event—it’s a movement to support local shelters and save lives together.”
In order to make it easier for potential pet owners to adopt, BARC officials will extend adoption hours and open on Mondays, a day when the shelter is typically closed, according to a news release. Each adoption includes the pet’s spay/neuter surgery, vaccination, microchip and city registration.
What else?
The Houston SPCA will start its summer adoption fee special from July 4-31 with pricing cut in half. All pets in the adoption center will be 50% off their regular adoption fee, which ranges from $35-$195, according to a June 27 news release, excluding equine and farm animals.
Each adoption includes a health exam, microchip, spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, a bag of pet food and a complimentary post-adoption exam.
“Bringing a pet into your home is a major commitment—typically 10-15 years of care, love and responsibility. The Houston SPCA encourages potential adopters to review helpful resources and readiness tips on our website before adoption,” a statement from the organization reads.
