Officials with Houston Methodist announced plans Dec. 18 to build a new innovation and research center following a gift from philanthropists and longtime hospital supporters Ann Bookout and John Bookout III.

What's happening

The Bookout Center for Medical Innovation, Technology, Research and Education will be launched within the Houston Methodist Academic Institute in the Texas Medical Center at 6670 Bertner Ave., Houston. It will build on the success of the Houston Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation and Education, which was created in 2007 as part of the vision of John Bookout III’s father, John Bookout II, according to a Dec. 18 news release.

The amount given by the Bookouts for the new center was not disclosed.

The details

Research at the new center will focus on enhancing the use of robotics and imaging in medicine across all health care levels and specialties, according to the release. Research will be facilitated in simulated, highly realistic surgical environments and will include the use of virtual reality, robotics, artificial intelligence, and high-resolution imaging and diagnostics.

Dr. Alan Lumsden will serve as medical director. Lumsden also serves as chair of Methodist's DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center and its Department of Cardiovascular Surgery.

What they're saying

"The Bookout Center will complement our existing programs with robust research, clinical trials and the expertise to develop further innovation in these fields,” Lumsden said. “We are grateful to the Bookouts for giving us the opportunity to lead the world in developing and refining these life-saving technologies, which will continue to improve outcomes and recovery times for patients.”
