Fewer than 500 COVID-19 patients are currently checked in at Texas Medical Center hospitals as of Sept. 23, according to the medical district’s data dashboard.

With 478 patients total, that is about a 30% drop since Sept. 4, when the medical center reported 685 patients in its facilities with the viral disease.

There were 80 new COVID-19 patients admitted to Texas Medical Center facilities on Sept. 23, a slightly lower total than the 84 new COVID-19 patients per day on average the medical center has seen in the last seven days, according to the dashboard data.

The total number of intensive care units in use has dipped slightly to 1,200 over the last three weeks, according to Sept. 23 data, while the number of patients hooked to those units with COVID-19 has continued to decline, now at 163. This is far below the 1,330-bed threshold that necessitates additional staffing and beds, as outlined in the medical center’s Phase II plan.

The TMC is also reporting a diminished positivity rate of 3.5% for about 2,500 COVID-19 tests performed Sept. 22. This compares to the peak reached July 9, when 23% of patients tested positive for the coronavirus.

Data collected by TMC spans hospitals in nine counties in Greater Houston, including Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller counties.
