West University Place City Council approved the appointment of Michael Leech, the city’s new public works director, at the June 23 City Council meeting. The new public works director is set to begin July 21.

The background
Leech replaces Danny Cameron, West U’s former public works director, who retired earlier in the year, according to agenda documents. Before coming to West U, Leech’s experience includes nearly 28 years in public works throughout Sugar Land, Pearland, Bellaire and most recently in Baytown.
Digging deeper
The Public Works Department addresses the city’s utility and transportation needs. According to the city’s website, projects the department oversees includes:
- Water
- Wastewater
- Drainage utilities
- City streets
- Sidewalks
- City facilities
The project
The department is also handling the Milton Street Water Line project, which is in Phase 1, and will replace 2,400 linear feet of cast iron pipe with new PVC pipe to improve water efficiency throughout the city.
