Houston is hosting Navy Fleet Week in the Port of Houston in November, marking Houston as the first Texas city to host the event, according to an April 29 news release.

The details

Fleet Week is an annual tradition in which the United States Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard dock their ships in major cities for a week, according to the news release. Fleet Week is run multiple times of the year in different cities.

From November 5 to 12, Houston will host three Navy vessels and over 1,000 sailors and Marines, allowing them to experience the local culture and history of Houston. Fleet Week includes entertainment events, educational opportunities, community service activities and opportunities for local leaders to engage with Navy leadership.

The week-long celebration also includes hundreds of events and activities for Houston residents and visitors from around the state, including:
  • Ship tours
  • Military demonstrations
  • Air shows
  • Educational programs
"This is an honor for Houston,” Houston Mayor John Whitmire said. “Fleet Week will build on the positive relationships between the military and the community and allow Houstonians and all other visitors to learn more about the U.S. Navy's proud history of courage and service to the country.”

According to the news release, Houston and the Navy share a “special maritime connection,” as billions of dollars worth of trade flow in and out of the Houston Ship Channel every day, and the Navy is responsible for protecting that seaborne trade as it travels across oceans.

Something to note

Fleet Week Houston will also coincide with the city’s Veterans Day celebrations and serve as the closing event for the year-long celebrations of the Navy and Marine Corps' 250th anniversaries.
