Correction: An earlier version of this story said the West University Place City Council approved the design of wastewater treatment plant improvements. The council approved the construction design contract, allowing the design process to begin.

During the Feb. 14 meeting of the West University Place City Council, parks and recreation staff presented plans for Judson Park improvements.

Additions include a gaga ball pit and the drawing of pickleball lines on the tennis court. A timeline for the improvements—which will be funded entirely by the nonprofit Friends of West U Parks—has work starting in June and finishing in August.

Also on the agenda were two significant plans for city upgrades: improvements to the city’s wastewater treatment plant on North Braeswood Boulevard and the replacement of network switch infrastructure throughout all city facilities.

The wastewater treatment plant improvements are expected to cost $1.25 million and were pitched with the goal of making the plant more efficient and flood proof. The council approved the construction design contract submitted by Kimley-Horn, a planning and design engineering consulting firm, at the Feb. 14 meeting.

Once the design is completed, the item will come back to the Council for consideration of the construction phase, a process that would include permitting, bidding and construction.

Plans for the network switch infrastructure were also approved. The $208,197 project is meant to address deficiencies in the current network, according to IT Director Kevin Davenport.

The switch infrastructure is “the backend that connects everything together,” Davenport told the council.

“[The current equipment] is over 10 years old," he said.

In addition, the city's Senior Services Board requested consideration and possible ratification of a mission statement for the board by the council.
