Several events are taking place around the Bellaire, Meyerland, West University and surrounding area in August, including the annual Houston Shakespeare festival and the Children's Museum Houston's Faux-lympics.

'The Woman in Black': Main Street Theater in Rice Village debuts a play telling the story of Arthur Kipps, a man who believes a curse has been cast on his family by the titular "Woman in Black." The play is directed by Philip Hays and is based on the story by English writer Susan Hill. The show, which kicked off in July, carries on through August with a number of additional performances.Faux-lympics: The Children’s Museum hosts a series of events that blend friendly competition with physical engagement, and lessons in teamwork and sportsmanship. The schedule of games starts July 26 with breakdancing lessons and concludes Aug. 10 with a dunk tank toss. The series runs daily in between, excluding weekends, with events that include paper airplane throwing, hula hoop marathons and velcro darts.

Houston Shakespeare Festival: The Miller Outdoor Theatre hosts the 50th annual Shakespeare Festival. Performers from the University of Houston Theatre & Dance and Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts will alternate performances of the iconic plays “Romeo & Juliet” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” A pre-show panel will be held before every show.Mixers and Elixirs: The Houston Museum of Natural Science hosts this 21 years and older event with a cash bar, food trucks and a dance floor. Music will be provided by DJ Troy Parker & Karaoke.

Mess Makers: The Nature Discovery Center invites children ages 3-7 years old to explore messes of mud, flowers, paint and shaving cream to create works of art. Prior registration is required to attend.In Person: Jodi Picoult: Brazos Bookstore hosts author Jodi Picoult for an appearance and discussion at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church, promoting her new novel entitled “By Any Other Name.” Entry gets attendees a copy of a pre-signed book.
