Unofficial voting results from the city of Bellaire show Todd Thurber holds the lead in the May 2 race for Bellaire City Council, Position 4.
Thurber has received 60.77% of the vote, or 683 votes, with Gay Mayeux receiving the second-highest number of votes at 329 votes, or 29.27%. All results remain unofficial until canvassed.
How we got here
After Cindy Cohen-Taylor vacated her seat early in December, Bellaire City Council officially adopted an ordinance in January to call a special election to fill the role.
Cohen-Taylor won her seat for Position 4 on Bellaire City Council in the 2024 race against opponent Elan Tavor, as previously reported by Community Impact.
In a Dec. 3 social media post, city staff thanked Cohen-Taylor for her contributions to the city and her time spent on council.
On the ballot
Candidates interested in the position could apply for a place on the ballot from Jan. 26 to March 3.
The four candidates who applied within that time frame are:
- Todd Thurber
- Shuba Grewal
- Gay Mayeux
- Kevin Newman
The candidate who fills the vacant seat after the election will serve the remainder of the term through January 2028.
What else?
During the early voting period from April 20 to April 28, nearly 1,000 Bellaire voters cast ballots, according to city election data.
Remaining mail-in ballots cast will be counted May 4, Community Relations Administrator Cheryl Bright said.
