Why are you running for election to District 134?
During my two terms in the legislature, I have successfully cut through the gridlock in Austin to provide life-saving abortion protections, address public safety, reform our criminal justice system and increase access to mental health resources. I love Texas and I’m ready to continue fighting to make it better.
If elected, what would your top priorities be during the 2025 Legislative Session?
I am incredibly proud to represent House District 134. But we have more work to do. My priorities include expanding access to health care, including mental health care and Medicaid insurance; protecting women’s health and reproductive rights; ensuring free and fair elections; ending gun violence; addressing climate change; and restoring local control.
What, if anything, do you believe the Texas Legislature should work on with regards to public school funding?
The State of Texas must provide a free public education to every child. Yet, Gov. [Greg] Abbott and Republicans are shifting funding for public schools to corporate-run, for-profit private schools by promoting private school vouchers. I strongly oppose these actions and am working to provide more resources to teachers and classrooms.
What, if anything, should the legislature do to make housing more affordable in Houston?
I support tax breaks to incentivize developers to build affordable housing. Property tax relief measures for homeowners should also include relief for renters. We should restore local control over housing affordability programs, and look at supporting efforts at eviction assistance, including right-to-counsel programs.
