A new restaurant serving what the chef and owner calls "Asian Soul" food has opened in Houston.

What’s special about it?

Chef and owner Lasid Domineck started Hibachi King in his home state of Michigan. An opportunity arose to open a restaurant in Houston, leading Domineck to take his concept to Texas.

"It's been a tough fight, because I didn't know anybody here," Domineck said. "I didn't come with a buzz, I just came out of nowhere. So people are adjusting to this concept."

Domineck describes Asian Soul food as taking the classic flavors from hibachi—which is a type of cooking through Japanese-style grilling—and adding flavors typically seen in soul food.

He said his most popular dish is the combination platter with chicken and shrimp, served with fried rice, colored peppers, onions and zucchini. However, he has been seeing more people in Houston than in Michigan order their orange chicken and bourbon chicken.

"I want Hibachi King to be a staple in Texas," Domineck said. "This is not the first one I want to open. I want to open a chain, a Hibachi King chain. I just want the customers to come in and enjoy the food."
