Made up of community leaders, residents and parents, the committee meets at the civic center on the third Tuesday of every month at 4 p.m. The meetings are open to the public, and committee members encourage residents to attend and share what they envision for the future of Evergreen Park and its pool complex.
Since its establishment in the 1950s, the park and pool have undergone several renovations throughout the decades, but committee member Brad Mills said the grounds are still underutilized.
Mills raised his children a few blocks away from Evergreen Park, and said he recalls the park serving as a backyard for his family and his neighbors. He said he joined the committee to improve the park so it can once again serve as the community’s backyard.
The details
Over the past year, We Are Evergreen has taken preliminary steps to form a 501(c)(3) organization, surveyed Bellaire residents and created initial designs for what the remodel could look like.
Bellaire City Council member Cindy Cohen Taylor has already received a few requests.
“They really wanted it to be a traditional lap pool,” Taylor said. “Everyone would like an all-abilities playground; they really want shade, [and] walkways inside the park.”
Other improvements under consideration include a covered event space, flexible-use green spaces, lighting and restrooms, according to the committee’s website.
Going forward
The committee is holding a town hall at the civic center Nov. 19, where it will present three different architectural designs for the park and pool complex. They would like the public to share their opinion on which design is most favored, and from there, the committee will work on finalizing the new outline of the park.
In January, We Are Evergreen will present the plans to the Bellaire City Council for approval. Once approved, the committee will kick off a capital campaign to raise funds for the redevelopment.
