West U’s former public works director, Gerardo Barrera, announced his retirement from the position at a December council meeting. By January, Cameron was filling in as the interim public works director.
Cameron will delay his retirement for at least two years as he takes on the new position as director, according to City Manager Dave Beach. From there, Cameron will help find a new assistant public works director and get him or her up to speed in the community, in an effort to eventually take Cameron's position.
Beach called Cameron the “most qualified candidate."
"Danny comes with a wealth of knowledge, and I look forward for him to continue to pass that along to the next generation," Beach said. "He's held a wide range of positions in the city, and he's earned the respect of employees throughout public works because of that."
Cameron has had several roles within West U, including assistant director of public works, field services supervisor and crew leader. Prior to coming to West U, Cameron served more than 20 years with Pearland Public Works, according to a council memo.
