Warming shelters are preparing to open for local residents in need as the Greater Houston area braces for freezing temperatures forecast for Jan. 15-17.

What you need to know

Texans can expect the possibility of “higher electrical demand and the potential for lower reserves” on Jan. 15-17, according to a Jan. 10 news release from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas.

This list will be updated if more warming shelters around the Greater Houston area are announced.


Brazoria County Library System warming shelters will open at 8 a.m. on Jan. 16 and include:

  • Sacred Heart Catholic Church Parish Life Center, 704 Old Montgomery Road, Conroe (6 p.m. Jan. 14-noon Jan. 17)
  • The Salvation Army Conroe Community Center, 304 Avenue E., Conroe (normal operating hours Tuesday and Wednesday)
  • Sts. Simon And Jude Catholic Parish, 26777 Glen Loch Drive, The Woodlands (open if deemed necessary)
  • Underover Fellowship, 600 S. Frazier St., Conroe (open if deemed necessary)

The city of Houston can arrange free rides to the warming centers for anyone who needs assistance, according to the city’s Office of Emergency Management website. City of Houston shelters also welcome pets, which will be kept in kennels provided upon arrival.
