Community leaders and the public met Feb. 28 for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Challenger 7 Memorial Park in Webster to celebrate the completion of $5.3 million in upgrades to enhance the park.

The upgrades include the following, according to a Feb. 28 news release from Harris County Precinct 2:
The ribbon-cutting was attended by dignitaries, including Adrian Garcia, Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner; Rahman Milton, executive director of the Office of the County Engineer; and Bernard Harris, the first African American astronaut to walk in space, according to the release.
The backstory
The project broke ground in February 2025 and was paid for by Harris County and a grant from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, according to previous reporting from Community Impact.
The history
Located just a few miles from NASA, the park was dedicated in 1986 to honor the seven NASA astronauts who died in the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger, according to the city of Houston’s website.
