Galveston County saw nearly 600 new cases of COVID-19 over the Fourth of July weekend, according to Galveston County Health District data.

Additionally, four county residents died from the coronavirus died July 6, bringing the death count for Galveston County up to 50.

The county saw 235 new cases on July 4, 219 on July 5 and 142 on July 6. The total number of cases is now 4,586—up 596 from the 3,990 cases as of July 3.

Of the thousands of cases, hundreds are due to outbreaks at nursing homes. There have been at least 251 total cases at The Resort at Texas City, Ashton Parke Care Center, Regent Care Center of League City, The Crossings, and Friendship Haven Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

Cases have been surging across Texas in recent weeks, including in Galveston County. Since June 1, there have been 3,769 new cases in the county, meaning over 82% of Galveston County's cases have been recorded in the last five weeks of what has so far been a 16-week outbreak in Galveston County.
