Houston City Council members approved a $1.2 million interlocal agreement May 20 between the city and the Memorial-Heights Redevelopment Authority for proposed improvements to Stude Park.
In a nutshell
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department closed the neighborhood park in Woodland Heights in December as officials began to look at replacing the playground structure and implementing overall improvements.
Improvements are set to include:
- Enhanced access for pedestrians and cyclists
- Upgraded pathways
- Shade structures
- Security upgrades
- Renovated playground
MHRA officials said the proposed playground concept will be inspired by the surrounding natural environment, with a design that offers activities for people of all ages and abilities.
The details
At the heart of the playground, a Community Game Room will provide space for family-friendly lawn games along with tables and seating for gathering, according to an update from the authority. A vibrant bayou feature will also shape the main play area, organizing a variety of elements for climbing, spinning, balancing and rocking.
The plan, according to the agenda item, also calls for improvements to the community center and pool facilities as funding is identified.
Also of note
The overall project will cost $1.2 million, with the MHRA contributing $750,000 toward the project. The authority will also serve as project manager and be responsible for coordinating all aspects of planning, design and construction of the project, per the agenda item.
Construction is anticipated to start in the second quarter of 2027.
