Houston City Council greenlights Montrose’s Avondale Promenade Park contract

A forthcoming public park on Westheimer Road in Montrose, Avondale Promenade Park, reached a new milestone Nov. 20.

Houston City Council approved the acceptance of a $900,000 grant from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and a $14,000 landscape architecture contract funded by the city of Houston.

The park designs include a grove of trees with benches, an interactive globe sculpture, an art panel that details the area’s history as a haven for the LGBTQ community and the new location of the Montrose Remembrance Garden, a tribute to victims of hate crimes.

Ellen Cohen, the mayor pro tem and council member for District C, said she is pleased to know the park is moving forward after years of planning.

“I think it’s an incredibly important part we’ve been working on since 2014,” she said. “It will have a relocation of the Montrose Remembrance Garden. We’re moving it from private property and putting it in the permanently protected home.”

The project is expected to break ground in early 2020, city officials said.
