District C council member Abbie Kamin began the May 20 City Council meeting by thanking her son and husband for their support during her time on council.
“Oftentimes when we have people that are willing to serve as electeds, I thank them also for their family service,” she said while holding her son. “And today I get to thank my family.”
What happened
Kamin attended her final meeting as a City Council member as she prepares to become the interim Harris County attorney.
During the meeting, each council member and Mayor John Whitmire thanked her for her time on council and shared memories of their work with her.
“I think [public service] is a calling, and you have definitely answered that calling each and every day as a council member,” Whitmire said. “And I know you’ll do it going forward.”
Some background
Kamin joined Houston City Council in 2019 and was reelected in 2023. She is now the democratic candidate for Harris County attorney and will start the position as interim attorney in June.
During her time on council, Kamin’s work included passing a policy for paid parental leave for city employees, taking a deeper look at gun violence as a health issue and climate sustainability. She said she plans to take those issues to Harris County.
“The people of Houston and Harris County deserve nothing less from their leaders than giving it everything they have, every single day,” she said.
Kamin added that she felt privileged to serve District C.
“The privilege to make a difference I do not take lightly,” she said. “My time at City Hall has meant everything to me. This has been a passion, an extraordinary privilege to serve and work with my residents every single day.”
What’s next
Kamin’s official last day as council member is May 26, and new council member Joe Panzarella will be sworn in May 27. Kamin said she will begin her work as Harris County attorney June 15.
Before she leaves, she said she will publish the District C report, which will show all of the work that has been done in District C during her time as council member, as well as updates on current projects.
