Houston ISD will hold summer school virtually, starting June 8

Houston ISD will conduct summer school for an estimated 40,000 students totally online, with paper-based instruction supplementing elementary and middle school instruction, the district announced May 27.

Classes are held Monday through Thursday, June 8 to July 2, with teachers meeting with students using the Microsoft Teams conferencing app.

Daily attendance requirements are two hours for kindergarten through second grade, three hours for third through fifth, and four hours for all other grades. The time includes learning from teachers in live lessons, in small group sessions and with assigned materials.

“Our virtual summer school plan is a continuation of our commitment to ensure our students continue to be safely engaged academically and prepared for their grade level during the COVID-19 pandemic,” HISD Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan said in a news release.

The district will also broadcast lessons on its cable channel, and those who cannot access online learning will have to complete lessons in packet form.

For students not enrolled in summer school, all course materials are available in paper form by request. Online access to Imagine Literacy and Math will also be available to all families starting June 1.
