The first Houston location of Citizens—a cafe and restaurant meant to evoke the cafe culture of Australia—will open in early June at 907 Westheimer Road in Montrose, next door to Velvet Taco and across the street from the Montrose Collective mixed-use development.
The new location, officially called Citizens of Montrose, will open as an all-day cafe serving breakfast classics with an Australian flair, according to a May 18 news release. Co-founders Justin Giuffrida and Andrew Geisel, both Australian natives, said Australian cafe culture involves good breakfast food served in a creative, social space.
“We choose Montrose because the neighborhood has such a rich history for its diverse community, thriving arts scene, and fantastic restaurants," Geisel said in a statement.
Menu items will include housemade banana bread French toast with miso butterscotch, barbecue pulled pork eggs Benedict served on a signature cheddar biscuit and cast-iron chorizo baked eggs. Although breakfast will be served all day, a lunch menu will also offer items such as a fried chicken sandwich with yuzo aioli, a smashed double brisket burger, and a miso chicken and harissa salad.
