Additional funding approved for new Montrose Public Library

Houston City Council members approved additional funding for the new Montrose Public Library at a Nov. 30 meeting to help cover the rising costs associated with an ongoing material shortage.

This new library will be located on the second floor of the Montrose Collective mixed-use development at 1001 California St., Houston. The city landed on the site after making a land deal with Radom Capital, the developer behind Montrose Collective, in 2019 that involved setting aside 12,000 square feet for the library.

The council approved an additional $1.26 million to go along with the $4.63 million previously awarded to David E. Harvey Builders Inc., which the city brought on for a design-build contract in June 2021.

In addition to providing new technology, the development will allow for a designated children’s space, a teen area as well as an adult area.

“The community could not be more excited for this, and I appreciate your support,” District C Council Member Abbie Kamin said at the meeting.

When it opens, the new library will replace the Freed-Montrose Neighborhood Library, based out of a building at 4100 Montrose Blvd., Houston. Construction is expected to be completed in March, according to filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
