4 projects approved at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport during March board meeting

Due to delays associated with the change in market shares of rental car companies, additional resources are required to implement the changes and to accelerate the work, according to board documents.

There are currently 12 authorized rental car agencies, according to the DFW Airport website. They are Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt and Thrifty.

The first game in Dallas Stadium is the Netherlands vs. Japan on June 14.

Security checkpoint enhancements

To meet the increased passenger volumes and support of Phase 1 of Terminal F, enhancements for the Terminal D Security Screening Checkpoint were approved.

A contract with Azteca-Omega Group of Dallas is for the installation of four new security screen checkpoints at the arrival level to help with passenger flow and reconfigure the existing security screen checkpoints at Gate D22. The contract amount is $23.3 million with a 510-calendar-day term. Work started in March, according to board documents.

This is part of the DFW Forward renovations, a $9 billion plan to upgrade the airport.

Lease termination to allow for future airfield development

The board approved the termination of a lease with the Public Facility Improvements Corp. for Campus West, a facility in the northwest portion of the airport. The previous tenant's lease has ended, and the building is currently vacant, according to board documents.

The board voted to terminate the lease to demolish the existing structure to allow for future airfield development. The effective date of the transaction will be Sept. 30.

The land was previously leased to Verizon, but in 2019, the communication company paid the Public Facility Improvements Corp. $40 million to take over the remaining 64 years of the lease, according to board documents.

Runway rehabilitation

Runway 18L-36R, constructed in 1974 when the airport opened, handles 50% of all departures on the west side of the airport, according to board documents.

An engineering assessment identified the need for rehabilitation for the runaway. A contract was awarded to Reyes TX Inc., from Grand Prairie, in an amount not to exceed $162 million for a 477 calendar-day project, starting in March.

The airport will apply for an $80 million of entitlement funding for the project to help cover the cost, board documents state.
