GCISD board hires new Grapevine High School head football coach

During a special meeting Jan. 23, Grapevine-Colleyville ISD board members unanimously approved hiring Ryan Smith as the new boys’ athletic coordinator and head football coach at Grapevine High School.

The backstory

According to a district news release, Smith’s most recent position was at East Texas Baptist University, where he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Smith’s coaching career includes positions at several high schools and colleges across Texas and Mississippi, including:

• Athletic director of Ovilla Christian School
• Associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Midlothian Heritage High School
• Head football coach at Nelson University, formerly known as Southwestern Assemblies of God University

The news release states Smith earned a Bachelor of Professional Studies degree in History and a Master of Organizational Leadership from Southwestern Assemblies of God University. In 2016, he was named Area Coach of the Year.
