Children of Southlake first responders, Westlake residents now eligible to attend Carroll ISD

Children of Southlake’s first responders and Westlake residents who do not live within the district will be able to attend Carroll ISD.

The CISD board of trustees approved amending its nonresident student policy on March 27. Under this provision, a first responder will mean a person employed in the Southlake Police Department or Southlake Fire Department.

Parents can request their child be transferred by filing an application with the superintendent, according to the policy. The transfer application for the 2023-24 school year will become available April 17.

Trustee Michelle Moore asked if the policy could be expanded to the entirety of the Departments of Public Safety, which would add the Office of Emergency Management.

“Over time we can be looking at other public servants in our community as we think about expanding that [policy], but we need to start somewhere, and ... that might be a good addition,” Moore said.

The board passed the policy as written, but Board President Cameron Bryan said the board could add more of the public safety department as an amendment to the policy at a later date.

CISD also expanded its nonresident student policy for Westlake residents. Students who live in Westlake, but not in CISD’s boundary, will be able to request transfer into the district. This is an expansion of the district’s policy that allowed Southlake residents who do not live within CISD’s boundary to request a transfer.
