The Carroll ISD board of trustees voted 6-0 to approve the new grading guidelines for the 2023-24 school year.
At the July 24 meeting, administrator Gina Petty highlighted the new artificial intelligence policy, which does not prohibit the use of AI but restricts it to monitor plagiarism. Other changes were made to clarify wording.

The district wants to use AI to enhance learning but also believes in the importance of individual effort, critical thinking and the responsible use of technology, according to documents. There were three expectations set in regards to using AI for student assignments.
- Originality: Students must take personal responsibility for the originality and authenticity of their work. Assignments should reflect their own thoughts, ideas and understanding of the subject matter.
- Proper attribution and citation: When incorporating AI-generated content into their assignments, students must accurately cite and attribute the sources. This includes acknowledging the use of AI tools and providing appropriate citations or attributions for any external content generated by AI algorithms.
- Academic integrity: Students should adhere to the principles of academic integrity, honesty and respect for intellectual property rights. Plagiarism, whether facilitated by AI tools or other means, is prohibited.

“We’re not shying away from [AI],” Place 6 Trustee Alex Sexton said. “We’re going to embrace it. It’s going to happen anyway, so we might as well get on board.”
