Faith in Action Georgetown, which typically provides over 1,000 rides to more than 900 enrolled seniors every year, had to pivot its service model due to COVID-19. Its Go-Van-Go program, which usually utilizes a passenger van to shuttle dozens of over-65 Georgetown residents to grocery shopping excursions and social outings, has been unused for over three months.
But in July, the organization announced a rephasing plan to allow for its return to regular services by the fall. On Aug. 3, from 2-4 p.m., Faith in Action Georgetown will host a virtual drive-thru volunteer celebration as its official announcement of return to service, a news release said.
In an effort to remain safe for the vulnerable population it serves, the organization will be offering single passenger rides for medical appointments while still maintaining its buddy program, which was introduced as an answer to the COVID-19 crisis, the release said. The buddy program pairs volunteers up with senior clients who are often isolated. Weekly phone calls provide check-in opportunities and social connection during the pandemic.
Faith in Action will also provide assistance with mail-in voter ballot applications, online grocery shopping and other needed services. By the fall, the organization hopes to return to some semblance of its former transportation services.
