1. Williams Drive corridor plan
In July, Georgetown City Council approved the final draft of the Williams Drive Corridor Study following an 18-month-long planning process organized by the city and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization
The comprehensive study explored how to alleviate congestion in the Williams corridor with a broad focus that included recommendations related to multimodal transportation, land use, economic development, housing and the environment.
The final plan recommends Georgetown focus within the next four years on improving traffic congestion, circulation and operations within the Williams corridor from Austin Avenue to Jim Hogg Road.
The study’s final version also recommends that initial improvements address bicycle and pedestrian upgrades, aesthetic enhancements and improved land-use planning to bolster economic development.
Proposed projects will require approval from City Council before work begins.
2. GoGeo bus service
Georgetown’s first fixed-route public transit system launched Aug. 21 with four bus routes running weekdays and Saturdays. The system’s funding includes a combination of federal money through Capital Metro, local money from the city budget’s general operating fund and a grant from the Georgetown Health Foundation. GoGeo’s annual operation is expected to cost about $757,000, according to the city.
All GoGeo routes will meet at a central stop at Georgetown Public Library, located at 402 W. Eighth St. Planners designed the routes to allow buses to complete round trips within 25 minutes.
GoGeo bus service is operated by the Capital Area Rural Transportation System, also known as CARTS. In addition to GoGeo, CARTS also operates a Red Line interurban bus route that will stop at the Georgetown library and offer service into Round Rock and Austin.
3. MoKan corridor study
The 28-mile MoKan corridor stretches east of I-35 from just south of Hwy. 29 in Georgetown to east of downtown Austin.
The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization transportation policy board approved $2 million in funding in 2017 for Round Rock to begin a study of transportation options along its portion of the abandoned rail corridor.
Round Rock officials pushed to have the MoKan corridor study because of its proximity to the planned location of the extension of Kenney Fort Boulevard.
Georgetown ISD
After Georgetown ISD voters approved a $160.6 million bond referendum in November 2015, the district enters its 2017-18 school year with several school sites in stages of construction or renovation. Those sites include Wagner Middle School, which is expected to open in late fall 2017. Wagner classes will be held in the former Williams Elementary School until then. District officials plan to turn the former elementary school campus into a leadership and learning center for GISD administrators.
