Southwestern University’s new multipurpose sports complex will open later this semester, university officials confirmed.
About the project
The philanthropy-funded sports complex is located on the site of the current football practice field, on the east side of the SU main campus. It includes a grandstand, stadium press box, synthetic turf field, locker room and concourse area.
Construction on the $9.2 million project began in January and will wrap up in time to host the Oct. 24 home football game vs. Rhodes College, according to university officials. Ahead of the game, SU will host on-campus tailgating for the first time beginning at 9:30 a.m., as well as a dedication ceremony to follow before kickoff at noon.
Something to note
The new stadium will bring back football to the SU campus for the first time since 1950, according to university documents. For the last several years, SU’s football program has played home games at a GISD facility.
It will also serve as a community center for other athletic teams and university events, including university commencement.

The project was included in the 2021-2026 Tactical Plan, the university’s first five-year tactical plan. University infrastructure was a key pillar of the plan, improving the school’s existing facilities as well as embarking on new capital projects.
The plan also facilitated fundraising efforts that contributed to the multipurpose sports complex, including the $160 million completed Thrive Campaign.
