Georgetown ISD works to place school marshals at campuses by early fall

Elementary level students in Georgetown ISD can expect to see some new faces on their campuses as the district works to staff school marshals for the upcoming school year.

Ahead of the start of the 2024-25 school year, GISD staff provided a status update on work done to meet requirements of House Bill 3, a state-mandated safety and security measure requiring Texas public and charter schools to have one armed security officer at each campus.

Stacie Seveska, GISD's Director of Campus Operations, said during an Aug. 5 workshop that the district will have school marshals placed at each of its elementary campuses by the start of early fall. The district will continue to contract with the Georgetown Police Department for school resource officers to be posted at the district's secondary schools, she said.

How we got here

In September, district staff said the district was looking at other schools with marshal programs to shape its own for this school year. The move satisfies the requirements of HB3. The law went into effect Sept. 1, 2020.

Heather Stoner, GISD's former director of operations and school safety, said her staff was working to create its job postings for school marshals by observing what has and has not worked at other schools. Doing so will allow staff to create these positions based on what will be expected of these marshals on a daily basis, she said. Her staff is also working with the Georgetown Police Department, which the district contracts with for school resource officers.
