Georgetown ISD will hold a grand opening celebration for East View High School's new agriculture barn Nov. 6.

What's happening?

The grand opening will be held Nov. 6 from 5-7 p.m. at East View High School, 4490 E. University Ave., Georgetown, in the new agriculture barn.

Students and sponsors of GISD's agriculture program began moving pigs, sheep and goats from the old barn located at Georgetown High School to the new barn at East View High School on Oct. 18. A project of the 2021 bond, voters approved the use of $10.3 million for the construction of the two barns. The new agriculture barn at EVHS is double the size of the older GHS barn at 80 pens, which will allow for the program to accommodate more students who do not already have a place to keep their animals at home, said Bretton Schultz, GISD's career and technical education director.

Future Farmers of America program sponsors will continue to supervise students in the program and prepare them for competition later this year, Schultz said, providing career and leadership development in the field of agriculture.

What's next?

Once all livestock animals have been removed from the GHS Ag barn, it will be demolished, and a new barn will be constructed in its place. The new barn is expected to open in fall 2024. The GHS barn will be the same as the EVHS barn, but with blue trim instead of red, said Melinda Brasher, GISD executive director for communications and community engagement.
