Georgetown ISD looks to adjust COVID-19 safety protocols to allow for end-of-year activities

Georgetown ISD is working on adjusting its COVID-19 safety protocols to allow for end-of-year activities, such as field trips, field days, graduation and prom.

“All these experiences that we know we want our students to have, we are trying to find safe ways to do those, so that we are nor foregoing them another year,” said Courtney Acosta, GISD executive director for operations and school leadership. “We really want to do everything we can to make sure our kids get these experiences if possible.”

According to Acosta, protocols are being developed following CDC guidelines, Williamson County guidance and information from GISD principals and protocols they have implemented in their school. The plan is to maintain safety practices that are already in place and expand them for end-of-year activities for each school by April, Acosta said.

With bigger events, such as prom and graduation, extra caution is being taken to ensure that every student can participate, she said.

“We are trying to be really mindful about [events] that might impact other [events] down the road while still giving kids all the experiences they could possibly have,” Acosta said.

Students and staff are still required to wear masks when not able to maintain social distancing measures, per a decision made by district officials March 5.
