More than 60 businesses reopened by mid-May after they were forced to temporarily close or relocate due to a weekslong evacuation after a Feb. 20 natural gas pipeline leak near River Bend and Williams drives. Many of the businesses were able to return to their offices and storefronts after six weeks but others, including the Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home, were closed for more than 90 days. The pipeline leak also prompted evacuations of several blocks of residences in the nearby area. Atmos Energy, the pipeline’s owner, provided hotel accommodations and food stipends to affected residents. The company said it also worked to compensate affected businesses and offer other assistance for businesses to continue their operations in temporary locations while the evacuation was in effect.
