The University of North Texas provided a progress report to Frisco City Council during its Sept. 4 regular meeting. The city of Frisco and UNT announced on May 1 a partnership to build a new branch campus in Frisco to serve at least 5,000 students. The future branch campus will be located at the southwest corner of Preston Road and Panther Creek Parkway and will open in 2023. As part of that partnership, UNT will purchase a 50,000-square-foot building owned by the Frisco Economic Development Corp. at 6170 Research Road. The building is currently occupied by LaunchPad City, a business accelerator and incubator. The university is expected to take over ownership of the building Oct. 1, and it will be renamed Inspire Park, UNT Provost Jennifer Cowley said. Cowley said the university has plans underway to renovate some of the laboratory space and will be offering classes in January for UNT students. Cowley said most of the current tenants located in the building as part of the LaunchPad City business accelerator have decided to stay in the building and renew their lease with UNT. Cowley said UNT is also looking for new tenants. “As we’re looking at new tenants, we’re looking for opportunities for partnerships between the teaching and research mission of the university and the kinds of businesses that can potentially engage in opportunities for collaborative research,” Cowley said.
