Third mosquito pool in Frisco tests positive for West Nile Virus

Frisco announced June 22 that a third mosquito pool in the city had tested positive for West Nile Virus.

In a news release announcing the positive test, city officials said they would be increasing surveillance efforts and treating areas near Whitefish Lake Drive and the Plantation Springs neighborhood with larvicide as needed. Plantation Springs is located south of Lebanon Road and north of the Sam Rayburn Tollway on Frisco's east side.

Frisco began testing for mosquitoes May 1. The city confirmed the first positive test for West Nile Virus in a mosquito pool near Oakbrook Park along Hickory Street on May 29. The second positive test of a mosquito pool was confirmed June 5 near Cottonwood Creek Greenbelt, which is located east of Teel Parkway and north of Main Street.

Officials said no human cases of the virus have been confirmed in Frisco.

The city shared four precautions for West Nile Virus promoted by the Texas Department of State Health Services:

• Use approved insect repellents that contain DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus every time you go outside.

• Drain standing water that collects in bird baths, French drains, clogged gutters, saucers under potted plants and “splash blocks” at the end of gutter down spouts.

• Wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk.

• Use air conditioning and make sure doors and windows have intact screens.
