The Frisco Fire Department will soon have access to radiation-detecting equipment.
During its Oct. 6 meeting, the Frisco City Council approved a purchase order for radiation detection backpacks for $139,977.
What to know
According to city documents, the $139,977 provides for the purchase of four backpacks fully equipped with a gamma detection box, a smartphone and charger kit, a user manual and a calibration certificate.
It also funds 10 personal radiation detectors that provide early warnings of hazardous radiation levels. The purchase includes carrying cases, a testing tool and precision-cut foam used to organize, transport and secure sensitive radiation detection instruments.
“These items will significantly enhance the fire department’s response capabilities to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive incidents,” city documents state.
Funding is available through the Radiation Detection Backpacks Grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, according to city documents.
