Frisco City Council passes 2021 State Legislative Agenda

Frisco City Council unanimously approved the city’s 2021 State Legislative Agenda during its Oct. 6 meeting.

The legislative agenda states Frisco’s highest priority is to preserve the city's ability to “govern effectively and efficiently for its residents, businesses, and visitors.” Adopting a legislative agenda was among the top 10 priorities for Frisco that council set during its winter work session in February. The agenda covers the topics of fiscal and financial strength, development, environment, elections and utilities.

Deputy Mayor Pro-Tem Shona Huffman explained the Frisco Legislative Committee, which includes herself, Deputy Mayor Will Sowell and Council Member Brian Livingston, works on this agenda every year. Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the pending state and nation elections, Huffman said the committee believes there will be several important items that will be discussed during the upcoming session of the Texas Legislature.

“We want to make sure that our residents and our community are protected as best as possible,” Huffman said. “These are the things we're submitting as important to continuing the success that Frisco has already had.”

Frisco Mayor Jeff Cheney explained the agenda covers strategies for how the city uses its sales tax revenues, handles its budgets and manages development and building standards, among other things.

“You'll hear us talk a lot about local control, and that [voters] elect us to make decisions on behalf of you for what’s best for this community,” Cheney said. “We feel like we know how to better serve this community because we are looking you in the eye. We know the wants and needs and not necessarily people sitting in Austin know the wants and needs of Frisco, Texas.”

The mayor praised the legislative committee for the work its members put in to create the agenda. He noted council only made administrative changes to the document brought forth by the committee.

“It's important to be able to advocate for these really important positions on behalf of the city,” Cheney said. “Thank you again to our legislative committee. I know we're going to have another busy session this year.”
