At a Frisco ISD meeting Monday night, the board of trustees heard from parents who opposed the rezoning proposals for the 2017-18 school year. Earlier this year, FISD presented rezoning proposals for next year to relieve overcrowding at some schools. Out of the 10 proposals, only four would impact students. The first proposed rezoning would relieve Comstock Elementary School by sending some students to Isbell and Elliot elementary schools. Parents who live in Craig Ranch were present to oppose the proposal. Parents were mostly concerned about separating their children from their teachers and friends. “The current rezoning proposal will destroy our bonding community,” one parent said during the public hearing. “Please find a solution that keeps all of Craig Ranch together even if it means we all have to move together.” The next rezoning proposal that would impact students would relieve Gunstream Elementary School by sending some students to Christie Elementary School. One parent expressed that he did not want his daughter to be moved, especially after she had finally found her footing at Gunstream. The parent said he liked the fact that his daughter could return to her former teacher for help so she did not feel like she was being tutored. Another rezoning proposal would relieve Hunt Middle School by moving some students to Clark Middle School. No speakers were present to oppose the proposal. The last rezoning proposal would move incoming ninth graders from Independence High School to Liberty High School. One of the speakers opposing the rezoning change was a Scoggins Middle School student, who said she did not want to move because she did not want to be separated from her older sister who attends Independence High School. Parents could apply for transfers for their children to stay at their current school. According to FISD's transfer guidelines, transfer requests for students in kindergarten to eighth grade to campuses that are projected to have less than 90 percent of capacity will be approved. A final decision on attendance zones for the 2017-18 school year is expected during the next board meeting on Jan.9. For information about the rezoning processes and the proposals, click here.
